Acting and Producing Goals for 2023

Well ok, I do realize the last time I posted anything to this site was my goals for 2022 haha, but hey! 2022 was a busy year! I think it’s a good sign that it took me a year to get back to this anyways.

Let’s do a post-mortem, shall we? Back in my last post a year ago, here are the goals I laid out for the year:

For acting, my goals were:

  1. Produce a super high quality, super specific theatrical demo reel (shooting in Feb)
  2. Find theatrical representation in LA (my agent already expanded commercially in LA, woo!)
  3. Become SAG-eligible to open up a whole new world of roles and possibilities
  4. Book a SAG role (commercial or theatrical)
  5. And finally…. book a co-star role on television! That’s my big one for the year and my ultimate goal!!!

For producing, my goals were:

  1. Run a successful festival circuit with Scattered
  2. Find shorts distribution for Scattered (maybe even made $1-2k on it!)
  3. Along with my boss, Chris Donahue, pitch and sell a film or television show
  4. And finally…. staff on a large network/streaming tv show (hopefully as an associate producer or something similar)!

So, on the acting side, I did not accomplish all of my goals, but I do feel like I’ve really pushed forward in that part of my career. I did produce a theatrical demo reel that I’m really proud of, and have a good foundation for my work. I applied to several strong LA-based agents who all passed, which was a bummer, BUT my agent Tabitha expanded to LA and is repping me there now, so I feel like it all worked out how it should have! I did not book a SAG role, but I did get 2 background vouchers, so I only need 1 more to become SAG-E. And lastly, I (spoiler) did not book a co-star role on television, but I did get my first co-star audition, so I count this as a 1/4 win! Now that I know I can get these auditions, I hope they become more and more fruitful this year.

On the producing side, it’s a similar deal – I’ve had some strong wins and some progress towards others. We did complete our festival circuit for Scattered. It wasn’t as strong as I would have liked, but I did end up finding distribution for a 2-year license from CPics and got paid for it! My boss Chris and I did pitch several film / television ideas which did not get picked up, but we also optioned some new material and I have high hopes for our pitches this year! And no, I didn’t get staffed on a large show, but I did get staffed on my first feature as a UPM, and have a few more features in the works this year that I think could turn into some line producing jobs.

A few other things that happened in 2022 for my career:

  • I booked 2 recurring jobs (1 commercial, 1 industrial) and formed strong relationships with both clients that I think will lead to some nice stability and fun within the acting side of my career
  • Auditioned for 70 jobs and booked 23 jobs (which also includes some direct bookings where I didn’t have to audition) – that means my booking ratio was 33%!
  • Formed deeper relationships with Bay Area casting directors and began relationships with some LA casting directors, who will hopefully remember and call me in for more work in 2023
  • Optioned a new book with my boss about a badass woman, and introduced the projects to partners at Amazon and WME where we hope to get some traction
  • Read 48 books in 2022, which hey, reading is just good for you.

These were all amazing steps for my third year in this career, and I am so privileged and fortunate to have other consulting jobs that are flexible and supplement the income I need to live.

Now, let’s move on to 2023!

My goals are more simplified this year:

  1. Film a guest star role on television (yup, just skipping over co-star with this goal and hoping to do both)
  2. Earn $60k in production revenue alone both with acting and producing jobs – I think financial goals are really important here, money is a reality in our lives and livelihood and in order to make this career sustainable, we need the dollars!
  3. On that note – QUIT all my other non-production related work in the hopes that I don’t need it to prop up this career anymore

That’s it! 3 simple goals, but I’ve also written many, many smaller steps and building blocks to achieve these. I think my simpler approach this year is actually super helpful, because in my mind if my smaller tasks don’t ladder up to one of these goals, then that task isn’t worth doing.

We’ll see what happens! Hopefully I’ll be slightly more diligent in updating these notes, but maybe not! If I’m too busy who could know, but maybe I’ll do a post talking about how I break down those goals into my weekly/monthly tasks. Cheers to all of us manifesting and making it happen for ourselves this year.
